Snapshot 2: The ecology of mission
Before “mixed ecology” became common language in missional circles, many people including myself envisioned mission as an intricate ecosystem, wildflower growth at the edges of ordered gardens. Part of what was being asked was how local churches, innovators, and movements could coexist without competing for sunlight.
In today’s terms, Applied Alchemy views this not as strategy but as spiritual ecology. A coach might help leaders identify potential growth zones; a mentor, by contrast, helps them discern which soil they’re called to tend. Context matters because transformation is not easily transferable and what thrives in one ecosystem may wither in another.
Imagine leadership less as management of programmes and more as custodianship of life. The principle of alchemy appears again: transformation happens through attentive observation, when what we learn from one corner of the garden becomes nourishment for the whole. Leadership becomes a both a composting act turning the remains of old patterns into fertile soil for new growth and an act of the imagination about what may grow in new spaces.

DIP – A monthly Applied Alchemy Leadership, Systems and Change space that examines the free content with relevant theory with practical application leadership ideas.
It’s built on tried and tested approaches and reflection on 30 years of pathfinding in the faith sector and aims to build a level leadership fluency where you naturally use all the tools in your kitbag and can grab the right one without even thinking about it!
Therefore a key part of DIP is that it also includes Applied Alchemy Questions prompts, Postures and Practices to adopt, and an Accountability Checklist for you to embed in your situation and at your own pace.
Heres and example of the expanded prompts there are 4 others to support your growth through the DIP level
